Thank you for your interest in becoming a law enforcement member of McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office.  
The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office is a modern law enforcement agency utilizing the latest in technology to effectively investigate, deter, and apprehend criminals.  Working with other city, state, and federal agencies that operate in the confines of the county, we dedicate ourselves 24/7 to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of McKenzie County.  The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office is committed to promoting individual responsibility and community commitment; we will work together to resolve problems, reduce crime, and provide a safe environment for our residents and visitors. 
The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office is looking for applicants that demonstrate certain attributes. Honesty ranks among the highest characteristic that an applicant can possess. It is extremely important for an applicant to be totally honest with all of his/her answers so that an investigator can accurately assess his/her positive points. 
To be eligible for appointment to the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office an applicant must:
  • Be of excellent moral character 
  • Obtained a High School Diploma or GED 
  • Be at least 18 years of age 
  • Possess a valid driver’s license 
  • Pass background investigation 
  • Pass oral review board 
  • ND POST Licensed or ND POST License eligible 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen 
  • No Misdemeanor Convictions within the last 3 years 
  • No domestic violence convictions 
  • No Felony Convictions 
  Salary Range: $27.64 to $29.91 per hour, DOE


A resume with cover letter must be submitted with your application booklet. Upon receipt of your application, your application will be received and reviewed by the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office.  Your application will then be assigned to a background investigator who will then begin your background process.  Your background investigator will contact you, notifying you of the assignment.  Upon successful completion of the background investigation, you may then be requested to present yourself in person for an Oral Review Board.  

A new application must be submitted each time an applicant is seeking employment.

An applicant who is a resident of North Dakota and eligible to claim veteran’s preference must abide by the Department of Veterans Affairs guidelines available at ND Department of Veterans Affairs and submit any documentations with an otherwise complete application.
