Job Description – County Surveyor Position
Under administrative direction of the Public
Works Director, plans, participates, organizes, and directs the work of the
Surveyor Division of the Public Works Department including, construction
staking, surveying for design project, review of land development plans,
development review as related to Public Works Department functions, field
operations, and office operations; and performs related work as required.
The following duties are
normal for this classification. These
are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Participates, organizes, and directs team work
for design and construction surveys for county road and bridge projects.
Reviews all land development plots and plans.
Maintains, develops, automates, and implements
systems, guidelines, policies, and procedures for the operation of the Surveyor
Department; creates technical guidelines to ensure uniformity and provide a
Directs the review of all maps and documentation
prior to recordation in order to ensure compliance with State and county laws
Directs the work of field and office staff in
conducting field surveys, preparation of maps, legal descriptions, development
review, and right of way research; sets performance standards and evaluates
professional, para-professional, and clerical personnel responsible for County
Surveyor functions through subordinate staff.
Coordinates the review of all activities of land
development relating to the Public Works Department requirements, including
civil engineering projects, design and preparation, and review of construction
plans to ensure they are surveyed correctly.
Prepares and monitors the annual budget for the
Reviews, analyzes, and interprets policies,
guidelines, and legislation to assure the County's compliance with federal,
state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances; through subordinates,
enforces laws, regulations, and ordinances pertaining to county surveying; and
ensures that records of survey, parcel maps, tract maps, lot line adjustments,
corner records, and voluntary mergers are in compliance with laws, ordinances,
policies, and practices.
Assists private surveyors, engineers, and the
general public in land surveying related problems.
Represents the County at various public meetings
and conferences to provide information of a technical nature. Oversee Survey Documentation.
Salary Range minimum $40 per hour
: Possession of a valid
Land Surveyor's License, or a valid Certificate of Registration as a Civil
Engineer issued by the State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional
Engineers is preferred but not required. Will also consider candidates with

professional surveying experience, including one year in a supervisory

that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides
the required knowledge and abilities.
Knowledge of: principles, practices, and
procedures of land surveying, land development, and mapping; federal and state
laws relating to land surveying and subdivision of land; principles and
practices of administration, supervision, and training; budget preparation; and
computerized mapping technologies as they relate to surveying.
Ability to: establish goals and objectives;
plan, organize, prioritize, and delegate work; formulate, explain, and
interpret policy; analyze and interpret technical information and/or property
descriptions for surveying or related operations; exercise independent
judgment; make complex computations involving areas, curves, traverses, and
closures involved in precise surveys; prepare correspondence and reports; make
public presentations; establish and maintain effective working relationships;
represent the department with tact and diplomacy; deal effectively with
representatives of other organizations and the public.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION: Possession of a Bachelor's
degree or Associate’s degree in land surveying, engineering, or a closely
related field is highly desirable.
